The Spiral of Fifths was a semi-finalist in the 2016 Guthman Musical Instrument Competition
The Spiral of Fifths was designed, built, and programmed by Ruben Dax and Josh Fishbein. It is an electronic keyboard instrument with an alternative note arrangement system that inspires performers to try new musical ideas because of the ease of improvisation and chord progression that is built into our system.
This 17 note wooden Marimba was designed, constructed, and tuned by Ruben Dax. The 17 bars are made of Mohogany and carved so that they are tuned in a chromatic scale from C to E an octave higher. The Notes are arranged similarly to a piano except that all half steps are evenly spaced. The Resonator tubes are made from PVC pipes and each one is tuned to resonate with a corresponding bar. The Frame is made of Maple, Mohogany, and Bocote. The Left and Right side panels are made of thin strips of Zebrawood, Osage Orange, Padauk, Maple, and Purple Heart
